RIDGE STITCH POUCH 1936

Description: The pattern starts at the center of the pouch and works outward in a stitch that resembling knitting.

MATERIALS:
Cotton # 10 about 250 yds
Crochet hook steel #8
6 inch zipper
1 yd. Heavy Cord for purse handles.

PATTERN NOTES:
Ridge Stitch: This stitch is made up of two alternating Rnds:

For all even numbered Rnds, make sc through back loop only of previous Rnd.

For all odd numbered Rnds, make dc through remaining loops. Note: You'll need to insert hook behind the previous even numbered Rnd to pick up unused loops.



DIRECTIONS:

Foundation Rnd: Ch 5. Sc in 5th ch from hook to form loop. Ch 62, turn.

Rnd 1: Dc in 4th chain from hook (counts as two dcs) Dc in next 58 ch sts. Make 8 dc in ring. Going down opposide side of foundation Rnd, dc in each dc to end of Rnd. (128 dc) Ch 1, turn.

Rnd 2: Sc in in back loop only of each st from previous rnd. Ch 3, turn.

Rnd 3: Picking up the remaining loops from Rnd 1, dc in each of next 60 dc sts. (The sc in Rnd 2 now form a Ridge.) Still crocheting through remaining loops from Rnd 1, make 2 dc in each of next 8 dc sts. Dc in next 60 dcs. (136 dcs). Ch 1, turn.

Rnd 4: Repeat Rnd 2

Rnd 5: Continuing in established pattern, make dc in next 61 dc, * 2 dc in next dc. (inc. made) 1 dc in next dc . Repeat from * 6 more times. 2 dc in next dc + dc in each st to end. ( 8 dc inc made) Ch 1, turn.

Rnd 6: Repeat Rnd 2.

Rnd 7: Make dc in next 61 dc. * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc. Repeat from * 6 more times. 2 dc in next dc + dc in each dc to end. ( 8 dc inc made, with 2 sts between each inc) Ch 1, turn.

Rnd 8: Repeat Rnd 2

Rnd 9: Make dc in next 62 dc. * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc. Repeat from * 6 more times. 2 dc in next dc + dc in each dc to end. ( 8 dc inc made, with 3 sts between each inc.) Ch 1, turn.

Rnd 10: Repeat Rnd 2

Rnd 11: Make dc in next 62 dc. * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc. Repeat from * 6 more times. 2 dc in next dc + dc in each dc to end. ( 8 dc inc made, with 4 sts between each inc ) Ch 1, turn.

Rnd 12: Repeat Rnd 2

Rnds 13, 15, 17, 19, 20, 21, 23, 25, 27. Continue in established pattern, continuing to increase 8 dc on each Rnd and adding one stitch between each increase. Continue to add one st at the beginning of every other Rnd before increases: Rnd 13, 15: dc in next 63. Rnds 17,19 dc in next 64. Rnds 20, 21: dc in next 65. Rnds 23, 25 dc in next 66. Rnd 27 dc in next 67.

Rnds 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, and 28: Repeat Rnd 2.

Rnd 29: Sl St in each of next 30 sts. (this will be the side opening) . Place a marker 30 sts in on the opposite side. Dc across, stopping at the marker. Ch 3, turn.

Rnd 30: *Dc in each of next 4 dc. Sk 1 dc. Repeat from * to end of Rnd. Fasten off.

Make another piece following the above directions.

Assembly:
With wrong sides together hand sew pieces together, leaving 30 sl st section at the open.

Handle. Chain 9. Join with sl st to form ring. Do not fasten off. Cut cord in half & pass one end of cord through ring. Holding cord, work 1 dc in st ch of ring. Picking up back loop only, dc in each dc around. Continue working in rounds, until cord is covered. Fasten off. Sew ends of handle together. Make another handle in the same manner.

Fold top 15 sts of bag to inside. Sew one handle to each side of bag, slightly below this fold to hide the sewing. Insert zipper into opening and sew into place.
