This model, with an edging, was made by Meri Abrams using one strand of cotton 4-ply and a J hook.

Roll part of yellow and black skeins into balls so that you are working with two strands throughout. This pattern also makes a nice mousepad. Toni
Meri Abrams' Variation: I used Lily Sugar and Cream 4-ply cotton yarn , 1 strand, and a J hook.The one thing I did, since I was not using 2 strands, was to only chain 5, instead of 8 for the chain row. My finished smiley measures about 6 inches in diameter. It worked up very fast, I would say about and hour
Chain 6 loosely, join to form circle.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 15 dc's in circle, join to top of ch 3 (16).
Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same stitch, 2 dc in each dc around, join. (32)
Rnd 3: Ch 3, 2 dc's in next dc, (dc in next dc, 2dc in next dc) 3 times, change to black [carry yellow along back of work] (dc in next dc, 2dc in next dc) 8 times, pick up yellow (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc) 4 times. join. (48)
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, change to black (carry yellow behind), 2 varied puff stitches in next dc
(Varied Puff stitch - yo, draw up loop to height of dc, yo draw up loop, yo draw up loop, yo, draw through all loops on hook. Repeat once more but pick up yellow on last yo and draw through all loops) [eye made], (dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc) 12 times, repeat eye (2 varied puff stitch) in next dc, dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in last dc, join. (64)
Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in next 3 dc, 2dc in next dc, (dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc) around except on eye crochet in back loop only for those two stitches. (77)
Rnd 6: Join to top of ch 3 with a sc, (ch 3, sk next dc, sc in next dc) around. Join to beginning sc.
