MOTIF: 5 "

PATTERN NOTES:
One motif with a border makes a nice coaster. (rnds 1-8)
Ch 1 at beginning of round = 1 sc; Ch 3 at beginning of round = 1 dc
When hdc is at beginning of round, substitute a ch 2.

MATERIALS:
Size 10 knit cro sheen or Pearl Cotton #5 in two colors (One color is for the border)
Steel Crochet Hook Size 6

DIRECTIONS:
With MC, Ch 6, join in ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 11 sc in same ring (12 sc) sl st to join.

Rnd 2: Ch 3. Dc in first sc. Make 2 dc in each st around. (24 dc) sl st to join.

Rnd 3: Ch 4, dc in next st. *Ch 1, dc in next st. Repeat from * around. Sl st to join.

Rnd 4: Ch 3. *Make 2 dc in ch-1 loop, dc in next st (twice). Ch 6, dc in next st. Repeat from * around. End with ch 6 sl st to join.

Rnd 5: Sl st to 2 dc in group. Ch 3. *Dc in each of next 4 sts in group. Ch 5, sc in center of loop, ch 5. Dc in 2nd dc of group. Repeat from * around. End with ch 5,sl st to first st.

Rnd 6 Sl st to 2nd dc in group. Ch 3. Dc in next 2 sts in group. *Ch 5, sc in center of loop (twice). Ch 5. Sk 1 st. Dc in next 3 sts. Sk next st. Repeat from * around. End with ch 5 sl st to join.

Rnd 7: Sl st to 2nd dc. Ch 3. *Sk Ch-5 loop. All in next loop make: Tr + ch 1 (four times). Ch 4. Tr + ch 1 (four times). Ch 2. Sk next ch-5 loop and next dc. Sc in middle dc of group. Sk next dc. Repeat from * around. End with ch 2, sl st to beginning. Fasten off.

Rnd 8: Border: Join CC in first ch-1 space between trs. Substituting ch 2 for first hdc of round, *Make 2 hdc in ch-1 space between tr (three times). In corner, make 2 hdc, ch 12, 2 hdc. Make 2 hdc in next ch-2 space (three times). Ch 3, sc in sc, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Fasten off. One Motif Completed.

For Next Motif: Repeat Rnd 1-7. Fasten Off MC. (This is now your " motif")

To Join Motifs:

Join CC in first ch-1 space between trs or working motif. Substitute ch 2 for first hdc of rnd
##In working motif, make 2 hdc in ch-1 space between tr (three times). In corner, make 2 hdc, ch 6. Sc in ch-12 loop of completed motif. Ch 6, Sc in working motif in same space as previous hdcs. Make 2 hdc in working motif to finish corner. Still on working motif make 2 hdc in ch-1 space between tr (three times). Ch 3, sc in sc, ch 3. Repeat from ## for next corner joining.

Then *Make 2 hdc in ch-1 space between trs (three times). In corner, make 2 hdc, ch 12, 2 hdc. Make 2 hdc in next ch-2 space (three times). Ch 3, sc in sc, ch 3. Repeat from * around to finish motif.

Two Motifs now are now joined.

Row 1: Join first row of motifs at two corners.

Rows 2 and 3: Join at two side corners and end corners.

Filler Motif (Optional) This Filler motif goes in the space between four joined motifs.

With CC, Ch 6. Join for ring.

Rnd: 1 Ch 3, make 11 dc in ring (12 dc)

Rnd 2: *Ch 8. Sk next 2 sts. Sc in next. Repeat * around. Join.

Rnd 3: *In loop of working filler motif, make 4 sc. Ch 6, sc in middle st between two points of completed star motif, ch 6. Make 4 more scs in same loop. In st between loops make sc, ch 1, sc. Repeat from * three more times to join all motifs. Fasten off.

Repeat for space between each set of 4 joined motifs.


Note: The Basic Star Motif design was published by Amus Bradley company, circa 1920, and originally intended for use as an antimacassar. It was made up of several star motifs joined at the tips. I've seen similar motifs published in other books with no reference to this earlier publication.
