FESTIVE WASHCLOTH & POTHOLDER SET

(I used a fingering weight sock yarn for the variegated rows. I found it at a speciality yarn store. There may be some speciality yarn stores on line too. Check our CP Links, our Merchant Review area, or your favorite web Donated to the Crochet Partners Library 6/97.

MATERIALS:
Various Colors of Fingering Weight Yarn, Cotton Carp Warp, or two strands of Cotton #10 held together:
D hook
Backing for Potholder: Worsted Weight Cotton & F hook. (If you like your potholders very thick, use two strands of worsted weight or line it with flannel.)
Yarn Needle

PATTERN NOTES:
Modified Puff Stitch: (Yarn over hook, insert in specified stitch, and pull through loop to height of a double crochet ) repeat 3 more times. (9 loops on hook) Yarn over and pull through 7 loops on hook. Yarn over and pull through remaining loops..

Change colors Pull new color through on last loop of last stitch. Fasten off unused colors. Weave threads as you work.


DIRECTIONS: Washcloth

With first color and smaller hook, Ch 43.

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd chain from hook (counts as first st). hdc in each remaining chain.(39 sts).Turn. .

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc) Sk st. Puff in next st.. Dc in next st. *Ch 1. Sk st. Dc in next st. Puff in next st. Dc in next st. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 1, Dc in last st. (10 puffs). Turn.

Row 3: Ch 2. Skip st. Hdc in each st and in each chain across, changing to variegated in last stitch (40 st.) Turn.


Row 4: Ch 2. Hdc in each st across. Turn.

Row 5: Ch 2. Hdc in each st across, changing to next color in last st. Turn.

Row 6: Repeat Row 4.

Row 7: Ch 3. Puff in next st. Dc in next . *Ch 1. Sk st. Dc in next st. Puff in next st. Dc in next st. Repeat from * across. Turn. (Every other time you repeat Row 7, end with ch 1, dc in last stitch.)

Row 8: Ch 2. Hdc in each st and each chain st across. Hdc in turning chain, pull through next color.

Repeat Rows 4-8 until desired width, minus border. Change colors at the end of Rows 5 & 8.


BORDER Rnd 1. With first border color, make 3 hdc in corner. *Turn and go along side of square. Make hdc in the side of each hdc stitch. Make 2 hdc in side of each dc. Make 3 hdc in next corner. Turn. Go along bottom of square. Hdc in each st across to next corner. Repeat from * around. Fasten off. .

Border Rnd 2: Attach second border color in middle hdc of any corner. In corner make: Ch3 (counts as 1st dc) 2 dc + ch 1+ 3 dc. *(Sk 2 sts. sc in next st. sk next 2 sts. make 5 dc in next st.) continue to next corner. In next corner make 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc. Repeat from * around.


DIRECTIONS: Potholder

Front: Work same as the washcloth.

Back: With worsted weight cotton and larger hook, chain 33.. Row 1: Hdc in 3rd chain from hook and in each chain across. Row 2: Ch 2. Work hdc in each hdc across. Repeat Row 2 until just about same size as the washcloth. Work a single crochet border around the back, making 3 sc in each corner. Fasten off.

Pin wrong sides of front and back sections together. The front border will hang out. Sew two sections together just below the bottom part of the border. Press, if needed.
