Materials:
Worsted Weight acylic yarn
4 mm hook

Notes:

Warning: the catnip I used was so potent that most of the recipients have already demolished these treats which they received at Christmas.

You can also make a larger sized version (a rat) for dogs to play with. Just use a 5 mm hook and double most of the instructions... you'll figure it out.

This pattern was originally posted to the knitlist; unfortunately I haven't been able to find out who the original poster was (any leads welcome). It was adapted for crochet by Mally Goos, and it is with her permission that I share it here. I have re-written the pattern, tidying up the wording and making a few small changes.

Directions:

Leaving about an 8" length for sewing up, ch 2.

Row 1: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn.

Row 2: 1 sc in each st (3 st), ch 1, turn.

Row 3: 2 sc in each st (6 st), ch 1, turn.

Row 4: 2 sc in each st (12 sc), ch 1, turn

Rows 5-6: sc across, ch 1, turn.

Row 7: 5 sc, 3 sc into each of next 2 st, 5 sc (16 st), ch 1, turn.

Row 8: 7 sc, 3 sc into each of next 2 st, 7 sc (20 st), ch 1, turn.

Rows 9-15: sc across, ch 1, turn.

Row 16: 2 sc, bring up loop in each of next 16 sc leaving all loops on hook, yarn over hook and through all loops, pull snug, 2 sc, ch 1, turn (should be 5 st for next row)

Row 17: bring up loop in each of 5 st, leaving all loops on hook, yarn over hook and through all loops, pull snug (1 st) ch about 18 st for tail, fasten off.

Sew together starting at nose. About 2/3 of the way, start filling the mouse with washable stuffing (e.g. fibrefill stuffing, old pantihose), adding a good dash of catnip. Finish sewing up. If desired, make facial features. Using pink yarn, make ears by looping yarn over your finger on each side of the head (where you think ears would go) and attaching securely. Make nose with pink by taking a few stitches at the end of the nose. Make eyes out of black yarn, and add whiskers.
