MATERIALS:

Royal Society Rug Cotton, 3 balls Light Blue or any color Royal Mouline, 1 skein each Black and Pink
Steel Crochet Hook size G
Steel Crochet Hook No. 7
Cotton batting


DIRECTIONS: LEG: with Rug Cotton and size G hook, ch 2.

1st rnd: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join rnds.

2nd rnd: 2 sc in each st around (16 sts)

3rd rnd: * 2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts. Repeat from * around (20 sts).

4th rnd: Working in the back loop only, make sc in each st around.

5th - 16th rnds incl: Working in both loops make sc in each st around. Fasten off.

Make another leg same as this. Do not fasten off at end of 16th rnd but ch 7, drop loop from hook, insert hook in last sc of 1st leg and pull dropped loop through, thus joining legs; sc in next 14 sts on 1st leg, ch 7, join as before to corresponding position on 2nd leg, sc in next 14 sts on 2nd leg.

Next rnd: (sc in 7 ch, sc in next 14 sts) twice (42 sts).

Following rnd: Sc in each st around.

Shape body as follows:

1st rnd: Sc in 3 sts, 2 sc in next st (an increase), sc in 20 sts, increase in next st, sc in 17 sts (44 sts).

2nd rnd: Mark increases on 2nd and 3rd rnds with colored threads, (increase in next st, sc in 21 sts) twice (46 sts).

3rd rnd: Sc in 8 sts, increase in next st, sc in 22 sts, increase in next st, sc in 14 sts (48 sts).

4th rnd: Sc in each st around, making increases over those on the 2nd rnd (50 sts).

5th rnd: Sc in each st around, making increases over those of the 3rd rnd (52 sts).

6th rnd: Inc only over the 1st increases on both 2nd and 3rd rnds (54 sts).

7th to 12th rnds incl: sc in ach st around. Remove markers.

13th rnd: mark decreases with colored thread, sk 1 st (a decrease), sc in 12 sts, decrease, sc in 14 sts, decrease, sc in 10 sts, decrease, sc in 14 sts (50 sts).

14th rnd: sc in 6 sts, decrease, sc in 24 sts, decrease, sc in 18 sts (48 sts).

15th and 16th rnds: make decreases over those on 13th rnd

17th to 21st rnds incl: make 6 decreases on each rnd. Fasten off.

Attach yarn to one end of the chain joining legs.

1st row: sc in 7 ch. Ch 1, turn.

2nd to 6th rows incl: sc in each st. Ch 1, turn. Fasten off.

Stuff legs and body firmly with cotton batting, making body rounded in front. Close opening at neck and sew sides and end of flap in place.

ARM (make 2):

work 1st and 2nd rnds as for Leg. Then work 4th to 14th rnds of Leg incl. Fasten off. Stuff Arms and lay aside.

FRONT OF HEAD:

Ch 2

1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join rnds.

2nd rnd: 2 sc in each st around (12 sts).

3rd rnd: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around (18 sts).

4th rnd: Work straight (18 sts).

5th rnd: * Sc in 2 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around (24 sts).

6th rnd: Work straight (24 sts)

7th rnd: Inc in next st, sc in 2 sts, inc in next st, sc in 4 sts, inc in next st, sc in 2 sts, inc in next st, sc in 12 sts (28 sts)

8th rnd: (Inc in next st, sc in next st) 8 times; inc in next st, sc in 11sts (37 sts)

9th, 10th and 11th rnds: Work straight.

2th rnd: (Inc in next st, sc in 2 sts) 8 times; inc in next st, sc in 12 sts (46 sts).

13th to 17th rnd incl: Work straight. Finish off.

BACK OF HEAD: Work 1st, 2nd and 3rd rnds of Front of Head. Continue working sc in each sc, increasing as necessary to keep work flat until there are 46 sts in rnd. Work 2 rnds straight. Fasten off. Sew both sections of head together, catching both loops of each st on each piece. Stuff head before opening is closed, the increased part of Front being forehead. Sew head securely to body. Sew Arms in place.

EAR (Make 2): Ch 2 Work 1st and 2nd rnds as for Leg.

3rd rnd: H dc in next st, (2 dc in next st, dc in next st) twice; 2 dc in next st, h dc in next st, sc in 8 sts, sl st in next st. Fasten off. Fold last 8 sts of 3rd rnd back and sew to base of dc's on same rnd, thus reinforcing back of Ear. Sew Ears in place.

EYE (Make 2): With Pink Mouline and No. 7 hook, ch 7. Work sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in nex ch, dc in next 2 ch, tr in next ch, 10 tr in last ch. Then working along opposite side of foundation chain, make tr in next ch, dc in next 2 ch, sc in next 2 ch, sl st in 1st sc made. Fasten off, leaving enough thread to sew with. Sew Eyes in place

NOSE: With Pink and No. 7 hook, ch 5. Work 8 tr in 5th ch from hook. Fasten off, leaving enough thread to sew with. Sew Nose in place.

With Black, embroider mouth with chain stitch. (The photo in the book shows it embroidered just under the point of the nose - djl)
