HAVE A HEART! --Heart Pincushion
1943 *NB

Donated by Donna Logan
from the library of Margaret Gussenhoven Logan

SPECIAL NOTE: I remember my mother making this. The pattern has a notation in it where she apparently made note of an error in the printed directions.... I will give the directions as printed, sticking in a note where my mother noted the error . The directions call for stuffing with cotton batting to make a pincushion.

Filling it with potpourri, and eliminating the word "Ouch!" would turn this into a lovely Valentine's Day gift - djl

Royal Perle, No 8: 2 balls of dark and 1 ball of light
steel crochet hook no. 6
cotton batting

GAUGE: 11 sts make 1 inch; 12 rows make 1 inch

DIRECTIONS: Starting at point with Dark, ch 2.

1st row: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 2, turn.

2nd row: 2 sc in 1st sc (increase made), sc in next sc, 2 sc in last sc (increase made).

3rd row: 2 sc in 1st sc, sc in each sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 2, turn. Repeat 3rd row until there are 29 sts on row. Ch 2, turn.

15th row: Sc in each st across. Ch 2, turn.

16th - 18th rows: Repeat 3rd row. Repeat last 4 rows until there are 59 sts on row. Work 1 row straight. Now increase 1 st at end of each row until there are 71 sts on row. Work 10 rows straight. Dec 1 st at end of each row until 63 sts remain - TO DECREASE, WORK OFF 2 STS AS 1 ST.

Next row: Dec 1 st, work across 29 sts, work off 2 sts as 1 st (30 sts). Turn.

Following row: Sl st across 2 sts, work across to last 2 sts, dec. Ch 2, turn.

Next row: Dec, work across to last 2 sts, do not work last 2 sts, turn. Repeat last 2 rows twice (8 sts). Dec 2 sts at both ends of next row. Ch 2, turn.

Next row: Dec, sc in 3 sts. Fasten off.

Make another piece same as this.

Place pieces together and join edges by working sc (with Dark) evenly through both thicknesses around edge. Before opening is too small, stuff heart firmly with cotton; then close opening.

CORD: Cut 4 strands of Light each 2 yards long. Twist these strands tightly. Double the twisted strands and give them a second twist in the opposite direction. Write the word "Ouch!" on a piece of paper. Place word on center of heart and pin in place. Sew cord over letters. Remove paper and finish off ends of cord.

(NOTE: a modern alternative would be to use fabric paint - djl)

EDGING: Attach Light in a sc on inner point at top of heart.

1st rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place where thread was attached. * Ch 5, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, dc in 1st sc made.

2nd rnd: * Ch 5, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, dc in 1st sc made.

3rd rnd: Same as 2nd rnd, ending with ch 5, sl st in 1st sc made.

4th rnd: * Sc in next loop, (ch 10, sc in same loop) 5 times; 5 sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join.

5th rnd: Sl st to top of 1st ch-10. * (ch 5, sc in 3rd ch from hook - p made; ch 2, sc in next loop) 4 times; sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join and fasten off.
