MATERIALS:

ROYAL SOCIETY BABY PEARL, 2 balls
steel crochet hook no. 8
1/2 yard ribbon 1/2-inch wide
1 small pearl button
GAUGE: 11 sc make 1 inch; 15 rows make 1 inch


DIRECTIONS:

  • Starting at neck edge, ch 56 (to measure 5 inches).

  • 1st row: Sc in 6th ch from hook and in next 2 ch, * 2 sc in next ch, sc in next 3 ch. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last 3 ch (63 sc). Ch 5, turn.

  • 2nd row: Sk 1st sc (decrease made), sc in each sc across to within last sc, do not work last sc (another decrease made). Ch 5, turn.

  • Repeat the 2nd row until 9 sc remain on row. Ch 5, turn.

  • Next row: Sk 1 sc, sc in next 3 sc, ch 5, sc in next 3 sc, ch 5, sc in next 2 sc. Fasten off.

  • Now work as follows:

  • 1st row: Ch 30 (to measure 2 3/4 inches), sl st in east st of foundation ch (except turning ch), ch 31. Turn.

  • 2nd row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 4 ch. (2 sc in next ch, sc in next 5 ch) 3 times; 2 sc in next ch, sc in next 4 ch, ch 3, sk next 2 ch, *sc in next loop, ch 3. Repeat from * across, working over ch-30 to correspond with beginning. Ch 1, turn.

  • 3rd row: Sc in each sc and 3 sc in each ch-3 sp across. Ch 1, turn.

  • 4th row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

  • 5th to 18th rows incl: Same as 4th row, increasing as necessary to keep work flat -- to increase, make 2 sc in 1 sc. Mark center st of last row with a pin. Count 33 sts on each side of pin and mark the 34th sts with pins (3 pins on row). Count 33 sc from each of last 2 pins and mark the following sts with pins as before (5 pins on row).

  • 19th row: Sc in each sc to within sc marked with pin, * remove pin and working in both loops of pin-marked st, make sc, ch 5 and sc; sc in next 33 sc. Repeat from * across until 5 ch-5 loops have been made. Now work sc in each sc to end of row. Fasten off.

  • 20th row: Turn and attach thread in both loops of 15th sc preceding 1st ch-5 loop, * ch 15, in next ch-5 loop make sc, ch20, sc, ch 15, sc, ch 10, sc, ch 15, sc, ch 20 and sc; ch 15, sk 14 sc, sc in next 5 sc. Repeat from * across, ending with ch-15; sk 14 sc after the last loop, sc in next sc (working in both loops). Turn.

  • 21st row: * 5 sc over ch-15, in next ch-20 loop make 3 dc, ch 3 and 3 dc (shell made); make a shell in each of next 4 loops, 5 sc over next ch-15, ch 3, sk 2 sc, shell in next sc (working in both loops), ch 3. Repeat from * across, ending with 5sc over last ch-15, sl st in next st. Fasten off.

  • Pass ribbon in and out of eyelets, making a double loop at each end. Sew neatly in place...Sew button at left neck edge. Make a buttonloop at opposite end.
