Editor's note: This pattern allows you lots of lee-way on length and width. However, in order to make the vest you will need to determine your model's measurements ahead of time, or plan on measuring your work-in-progress next to your model frequently. If the model isn't handy, you could try grabbing a sweater or something that you know fits your model and use that as a gauge. But, you **will** need some type of gauge.
16 oz (20,20 4 ply knit worsted weight yarn)
1 Size K crochet hook
GAUGE: 3sts=1", 2 rows=1"
NOTES: Pattern Stitch as follows: row 1:sk 1 ch, *sc in next ch, dc in next ch, rep from * across row, ch1, turn
row 2:sc in ea dc, dc in ea sc across, ch1, turn rep row 2 for pattern
BACK: ch55(61, 67).
Work in pattern stitch for 12(12 1/2, 13) or desired number of inches.
Sl st across first 6 sts, ch1, work in pattern stitch to last 6sts. Ch1, turn.
Decrease 1 st at each end of next 2 rows = 38(44, 50)sts. (To decrease: pick up lp in first st, pick up lp in 2nd st, yo and pull thru 3 lps.)
Work even until armhole measures 10 (10 1/2, 11) or desired number of inches.
Sl st across first 6(7, 8)sts, ch1, work pattern stitch across next 6(7,8)sts, fasten off.
skip next 14(16, 18) stitches for neck & then join yarn.
Ch1 and work pattern stitch across next 6(7,8)sts. Sl st in next 6(7,8)sts. Fasten off
Ch37(41, 45). Work in pattern stitch for 6(6 1/2, 7) inches.
Dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 16(18, 20)times.
When piece measures same as back to armhole, work armhole same as you did for the back.
On remaining 12(14,16)sts, work straight until armhole is same as back.
Sl st across first 6(7,8)sts. Ch1, work pattern stitch across next 6(7,8)sts. Fasten off.
Mark placement for 4 buttons.
Work same as right front, reversing placement of all shapings. Make button holes, according to instructions listed below, using the button placement on Right Front as a guide.
To make buttonholes:*work in pattern to dc before button placement. Work dc, ch1, sk 1sc, dc in next st, rep from * across.
On next row, work in pattern stitch, replacing skipped stitch with chain 1.
Sew shoulders and sides. Sc around armholes and outside edge of vest. Sew buttons in place.
