"BUTTERCUP" TABLE RUNNER, 1940

Completed Size about 15" x 45"
The motif for this table runner looks like one those pin wheels that you can hold in the wind and watch it whirl.

MATERIALS:

  • Cotton #10 (SouthMaid, Aunt Lydias, etc.) 8 big balls
  • Steel hook #7 (or size for preferred gauge.)

    GAUGE: Each motif measures about 1 1/2 inches across sides.

    PATTERN NOTES:

  • Cluster Stitch: Keeping last loop of each st on hook, make 3 trc in same space. Thread over and draw through all remaining loops on hook & pull tightly.
  • Ch 3 at beg of each rnd = double crochet.

    DIRECTIONS

    FIRST MOTIF: Ch 5, join with sl st to form ring.

  • Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring. * ch 3 (corner), 5 more dc in ring. Repeat from * twice. End with ch 3, 2 dc in ring. Sl st in top of 1st ch-3.

  • Rnd 2: Ch 5. *In corner space, make 3 trc Cluster + Ch4 (for corner) + Cluster. Ch 4 + sc in center dc of 5 dc group + ch 4. Repeat from * around. End with ch 4 and sl st to 1st chain of beginning ch 5. Fasten off.
    First Motif Completed.

    SECOND MOTIF: Ch 5, join with sl st to form ring.

  • Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring. * ch 3 (corner), 5 more dc in ring. Repeat from * twice. End with ch 3, 2 dc in ring. Sl st in top of 1st ch-3.

    To Join to Previous Motif:

  • Rnd 2: Ch 5. Cluster in corner ch-3. Ch 1. Insert hook in corresponding space between 2 clusters of previous motif. Thread over and draw loops through hook. Ch 2. On working motif, make another cluster to finish corner pattern. Ch 4 + sc in middle dc of 5 dc group + ch 4. Cluster in next corner. Ch 1. Join as to previous motif in corresponding corner. Ch 2. On working motif, make another cluster to finish corner pattern.

    To complete motif: *Ch 4 + sc in middle dc of 5 dc group + ch 4. cluster + Ch 4 cluster in unworked corner. Repeat from * once more. End with ch 4 and sl st to 1st chain of beginning ch 5. Fasten off.

    Continue in pattern established in 2nd motif until you have 10 motifs across and 29 motifs down for a total of 290 motifs.

    Block, if necessary.
