CHILD'S HOODED CARDIGAN -
Sizes 2, 4 & 6

This cardigan is made up of granny square type motifs sewn together to fit.

Finished Sizes:

  • Size 2: 21" chest,12 1/2" from shoulder, 7" sleeve w/o cuff, 9" across sleeve, upperarm
  • Size 4: 23" chest,14" from shoulder, 9" sleeve w/o cuff. 10" across sleeve, upperarm
  • Size 6: 25" in chest, 16" from shoulder, 10" sleeve w/o cuff, 11" across sleeve, upperarm


    PATTERN NOTES:
  • Instructions are written for size 2. Sizes 4 and 6 are in brackets.
  • HDC-corner group: 3 hdc, ch 3 and 3 hdc in space specified.
  • DC-corner group: 3 dc, ch 3 and 3 dc in space specified.


    MATERIALS:

    All Sizes use Aluminum G Crochet Hook

    for SIZE 2:
    8 oz 4 ply yarn, white
    4 oz 4 ply yarn, red
    1 oz 4 ply yarn, lt. olive green
    5 Buttons, 3/4" diameter

    for Size 4:
    9 oz 4 ply yarn, white
    5 oz 4 ply yarn, red
    1 1/2 oz 4 ply yard, lt olive green
    5 Buttons, 3/4 " diameter

    for Size 6:
    11 oz 4 ply yarn, white
    6 oz 4 ply yarn, red
    2 oz 4 ply yarn, lt olive green
    6 Buttons, 3/4" diameter

    GAUGE:
    4 dc = 1", 2 Rows = 1", 1 Motif A = 2 1/2" square, 1 Motif B = 3" square 1

    GENERAL DIRECTIONS: :
    Size 2: Motif A, make 25
    Size 4: Motif A, make 4 : Motif B, make 19
    Size 6: Motif B, make 26

    DIRECTIONS:

    MOTIF A: Starting at center with white, ch 4. Join with sl st to form ring.

  • RND 1: Ch 3, make 2 dc in ring, ch 1 for corner, (make 3 dc in ring, ch 1 for corner) 3 times. Join to top of ch 3. Fasten off.

  • RND 2: Attach green to next corner sp; ch 2, in same space make 2 hdc, ch 3 and 3 hdc (starting hdc-corner group) In next corner space, make 3 hdc, ch 3 and 3 hdc (hdc-corner group) Repeat from * 3 times. Join to top of ch 2. Fasten off.

  • RND 3: Attach red to next corner sp, make starting corner group in same sp, make 3 hdc between next two 3-hdc groups, In next corner, make corner group. 3 hdc between next two 3-hdc groups, 3 times. Join. Fasten off.

    MOTIF B: Work as for Motif A through rnd 1

  • RND 2: Attach green to next corner sp; ch 3, in same sp make 2 dc, ch 3 and 3 dc (starting dc-corner group): In next corner space, make 3 dc, ch 3 and 3 dc (dc-corner group) 3 times. Join to top of ch 3. Fasten off.

  • RND3: Attach red to next corner sp, make starting dc-corner group in same sp, 3 dc between next two 3 dc groups) 3 times. Join as before. Fasten off.

    BACK OF LEFT SLEEVE: Starting above wrist edge, with white ch 20 [22, 24].

  • Row 1 (right side): DC in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across -- 18[20, 22] dc, counting ch 3 as 1 dc. Ch 3, turn. Mark END of row for shoulder edge.

  • ROW 2: Working in BACK loops only, dc in next dc and in each dc across, dc in top of ch 3. Ch 3, turn. Repeating last row for pattern, work until 13 [17, 19] rows in all have been worked, end at shoulder edge. Next Row: Work in pattern across, then ch 20 [21, 28] for side edge of back.

    BACK:

  • Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across to next dc, dc in BACK loop of next dc, complete row in pattern -- 36[39, 48] sts. Ch 3, turn. Work even in pattern for 22[24, 26] more rows, end at shoulder edge. Ch 3, turn.

    BACK of RIGHT SLEEVE:

  • Row 1: Work in pattern across next 17 [19, 21] sts; do not work over remaining sts. Ch 3, turn. Work over the 18 [20, 22] sts until 14 [18, 20] rows in all have been worked for sleeve. Fasten off.

    FRONT of LEFT SLEEVE: Marking END of Row 2 for shoulder edge and omitting chain for side edge, work as for Back of Left Sleeve, end at shoulder edge. Ch 3, turn. Drop loop from hook.

    LEFT FRONT SECTION:

  • Row 1: Attach an 18" length of white to top of ch 3 at beg of last row, ch 18 [19, 26] for side edge, fasten off; pick up dropped loop and work in pattern across sts of last row, then dc in each ch across 36 [39, 48] sts. Ch 3, turn.

    Work even for 4 [4, 6] more rows. Fastenoff. RIGHT FRONT SECTION; Starting at center front edge, with white ch 38 [41, 50].

  • Row 1 (right side): Dc in 4th chain from hook and in each ch across 36 [39, 48] sts. Ch 3, turn. Marking END of Row 2 for shoulder edge, work even in pattern until 5 [5, 7] rows in all have been worked. Fasten off.

    TURN. NOW WORK FRONT OF RIGHT SLEEVE AS FOLLOWS:

  • Row 1: Skip first 18[ 19, 26] sts. Attach white to next st., ch 3., dc in BACK loop of each st across, dc in top of ch 3 -- 18{20, 22] st. Work even in pattern until 14[18, 20] rows in all have been worked for sleeve. Fasten off. NOTE:join in BACK LOOPS-ONLY for motifs!

    HOOD: Starting at left front, with white, ch 34 [38, 41].

  • Row 1(right side): Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across -- 32[36, 39] sts. Ch 3, turn. Work even in pattern until 17 [19, 21] rows in all have been worked. Fasten off.

    ASSEMBLY:

    With rows running vertically, fold hood in half and sew center top seam. Matching ridges formed by pattern, sew upper sleeve seams; then sew shoulder seams, leaving 1 [1, 2] rows free on each front for neck. Sew side seams, then sew lower sleeve seams. Sew lower edge of hood to neck edge.

    CUFFS:

    Size 2: For each cuff sew 2 Motifs A together, then sew opposite edges together to form cuff; then sew 15 Motifs A together to make a strip for entire front border and 6 Motifs A to make a strip for lower border.

    Size 4: For each cuff sew 2 Motifs A together same as for size 2; then sew14 Motifs B together to make a strip for entire front border and 5 Motifs B to make a strip for lower border.

    Size 6: For each cuff sew 2 Motifs B same as for Size 2; then sew 16 motifs B together to make a strip for entire front border and 6 Motifs B to make a strip for lower border.

    FOR ALL SIZES: Sew lower border to lower edge of garment, easing in to fit. Sew front border in place, matching motifs at lower edge. Sew cuffs in place on sleeves, easing in to fit.

    BORDER: On each front mark the st in line with shoulder seam.

  • RND 1: With right side facing, attach red to marked st on left front, ch 1, sc in same place where yarn was attached; keeping work flat and making 3 sc in each of the 2 corners at lower edge, sc in each st across left front, lower edge and right front; then sc across front edge of hood, holding in slightly. Join with sl st to first sc.

  • RND 2: Ch 1, sc in joining and in each sc around, making 3 sc in each of the 2 corners. Join.

    FOR SIZE 4 ONLY: Rep. RND 2.

    FOR ALL SIZES: With pins mark the position of 5 [5, 6] buttonholes evenly spaced on right front edge, having the first pin 1" up from lower edge and the last pin 1" below shoulder line.

  • NEXT RND: Ch 1, sc in joining, sc in each sc to first pin, (ch 2, skip next 2 sc, sc in each sc to next pin) 4 [4, 5] times; ch 2, skip next 2 sc, complete rnd as before. Join.

  • NEXT ROW: Ch 1, sc in each sc and in each ch, end with sc in st in line with right shoulder seam; do not work over sts on hood. DO NOT TURN.

  • LAST RND: Working from left to right, *insert hook in next sc to the right and complete a sc. Rep from * around entire edge, including hood. Join. Fasten off.

    CUFF EDGINGS:

  • RND 1: With right side facing, attach red to a seam, ch 1, sc in same sp where yarn was attached and in each st around. Join.

  • RND 2: Work as for LAST RND of Border. Sew on buttons.
