All the toppers use the same base, which is buttoned onto the topper itself. This allows the base and towel to be detached if it needs washing and the topper doesn't. The base is crocheted directly onto half of a regular dishtowel (so one dishtowel makes two topped towels) using a steel hook.
The patterns in this leaflet are absolutely adorable and very colorful. I especially like the animals -- the cow, the cat, and the teddy bear, but the flowers are a close second.
As for ease of crocheting, none of the designs use complicated stitches, although some of them -- the cow and cat in particular -- require mid-row color changes that I, personally, despise having to do. Assembly isn't too bad; usually just whip-stitching or crocheting the pieces together.
I did have trouble finding the exact size dishtowel the patterns require, but I managed to work with something reasonably close.
On the whole, I think this is a fun set of patterns that would make great gifts; or make them to brighten up your own kitchen.
